Dog and Puppy Training Tips
Whether you bring home a puppy or adopt an older dog, training should be fun for both your dog and you. Too often dog owners become discouraged when training doesn’t quite go as planned, which leads to more problems when the dog misbehaves or doesn’t listen. These dog training tips will get you on the right path.
1. Be Patient
It will take a while for your dog to learn to speak your language and understand exactly what it is you want him to do. That requires you to be patient. There should be no yelling, and no frustration, which will upset your dog and even scare him. Instead, go slow and both of you will be rewarded with success.
2. Encouragement
Your dog will learn much like a child. When you encourage and use positive reinforcement, your dog will try to please you. Your encouragement should include rewards whether that’s a treat or praise. Don’t yell or scold when your dog does not do as asked, instead repeat the command, and help your dog understand what it is you want from him. Yelling will only scare your dog.
3. Repeat, Repeat, Repeat
Repetition is the key to success. For example, if you want your dog to sit, say the command and gently push on his backside until he sits then praise him “good dog” and reward him with a treat. Work on one task at a time to avoid confusion. The more you repeat the command the quicker your dog will “get it.”
4. Structure
In order to be successful with your dog’s training; you should maintain some structure, which will help him retain what’s going on. It’s a great idea to work with your dog everyday at the same time and in the same place. Start by reviewing what they know before you begin working on something new. Your dog will look forward to this special training time and aim to please you. You will both benefit from this training by getting some exercise and bonding with each other.
There is plenty that you can teach your dog from the most basic commands to the most elaborate tricks. To save time and keep your frustration minimal follow these dog training tips to get you started down the right path.
